Challenge Program

Building on twenty-five years of experience, research and success, the Greater Victoria School District Challenge program for Gifted, Creative and Talented students offers a unique, dynamic and fulfilling educational opportunity. The program is based upon the cohort model: students take Challenge courses in the core subject areas of Math, Science, Social Studies and English while exploring their individual passions in integrated elective subjects. This ability group cohort model enables students to undertake a rigorous and enriched Renaissance style education. The award winning teaching staff fosters a love of learning built around the foundation of creative problem solving and real world applications of curriculum, with a strong commitment to developing each student’s limitless academic and creative potential.

The Challenge program works to facilitate the transfer of school-based curriculum to the world at large by fostering relationships with the University of Victoria, with all levels of government and with a wide variety of provincial, national and international education institutions. Students in the program are exposed to a number of leadership options within the school and the greater Victoria community.

Students are able to pursue their studies in both the French immersion and English tracks.

Flexible Studies: Leadership in Learning

Nationally recognized by the Canadian Education Association for innovation in teaching and learning, the Flexible Studies program is a two-year program designed for students interested in a structured, experiential learning approach to education, where students engage with their peers, teachers, community and environment as they aspire for academic and personal growth.

A foundational aspect of the Flexible Studies Program is learning in, with, and from our community.

Students in the Flexible Studies program complete their grade nine and ten curricular competencies for English, Social Studies, Science, Environmental Science, Career Life Education, and an Independent Directed Study in a structured inquiry-driven model of learning. Mathematics is completed in a grade specific, semestered class.

Students experience a wide variety of learning environments. Some of examples of the variety of learning environments students have experience in the past few years include:

  • direct instruction from a teacher in a classroom environment
  • listening to members of the community share their stories
  • author talks and writing workshops
  • week-long Poet-In-Residence workshops
  • month-long projects working with the Royal BC Museum
  • individual time to explore a Passion Project of students’ choosing
  • exploring local ecosystems (i.e., partnering with Swan Lake Nature Sancturary) and restoring the Garry Oak ecosystem at Reynolds as part of our Environmental Science course
  • overnight camping trips (i.e., a weekend trip to Saturna Island Marine Research & Education Society)
